IGA was founded in 1926 by Frank Grimes, a Chicago accountant who specialized in auditing the books of wholesale grocers. His goal was to develop a network of independent grocers to compete with the burgeoning chains. Along with five associates—Gene Flack, Louis Groebe, W. K. Hunter, H. V. Swenson, and William Thompson—Grimes developed IGA's strategy to capitalize on the strengths of chain stores while creating opportunities for individuals to own and operate an independent business.
Today, IGA is the world's largest voluntary supermarket network, with a presence in 45 countries.
We also have a second location in Lamoine, Maine—The Lamoine General Store—which we have operated since 2000. We offer a variety of convenience items, lottery tickets, lunch counter, and a variety of groceries.
